TECA Canada's Summer Youth Program Receives Record Applications

Popular program for newcomer youth sees 40% increase in applications for summer activities and learning.

TORONTO - TECA Canada's Summer Youth Program has received a record number of applications this year, with over 300 young people applying for 120 available spots—a 40% increase from last year. The eight-week program provides educational, recreational, and leadership activities for newcomer youth ages 12-18.

"The overwhelming interest shows just how much need there is for structured, supportive programming for newcomer youth during the summer months," said Youth Programs Manager John Doe. "Many of these young people are navigating multiple transitions—a new country, a new language, and soon, a new school year."

Program Components

This year's summer program has been expanded to include:

  • Academic support and English language practice
  • Sports and outdoor adventures
  • Arts and cultural expression workshops
  • Field trips to Toronto landmarks and institutions
  • Career exploration and university campus visits
  • Leadership development and civic engagement

Activities are designed to help participants build English language skills, develop friendships, explore their new city, and maintain academic progress during the summer break. The program operates five days per week from July through August.

Meeting Community Need

"We're working to secure additional funding to expand the program given the clear demand," explained Maria Rodriguez, Executive Director. "Our waiting list includes many young people who would greatly benefit from structured summer activities."

The program is staffed by qualified youth workers and educators, supported by university student interns and high school volunteers. Many staff members are former newcomers themselves who understand the challenges of cultural transition.

Parents have praised the program for its comprehensive approach. "It's not just keeping kids busy—they're learning, making friends, and becoming more confident," shared the mother of a previous participant. "My son was so shy when we arrived in Canada last year, and now he's giving tours to new participants."

TECA Canada is seeking corporate and individual sponsors to help expand the program's capacity for next summer. Interested supporters can contact the organization's development office.
